Scope of Work

A Communications Officer will play a vital role in crafting and executing a comprehensive communication strategy, fostering engagement with stakeholders, and amplifying our message through various channels.  

Under the guidance of the Director GIHD-STMU, the Communications Officer will: 

  • Develop and write communication material including press releases, media pitches, website content, social media posts, internal communications, and other marketing materials. 
  • Edit and proofread content for clarity, accuracy, and adherence to style guides. 
  • Attend events to collect information, conduct interviews, and write social media content 
  • Coordinate with GIHD-STMU’s photographers, as required, to capture relevant captions for photographs to complement stories and photo essays and overlay text/transcription for videos. 
  • Stay up-to-date on how the organization is being portrayed in the media and identify potential issues. 
  • Track metrics like engagement rates, follower growth, and website traffic to measure the effectiveness of social media efforts.

Expected Deliverables & Timelines

Depending on the project, this could be assistance with,  ad creation, media pitches, website content (blogs, articles), social media posts, internal communications (newsletters, employee updates), marketing materials (brochures, flyers) and press releases, or other tasks as assigned. 

Timelines: 

  • Deadlines for these tasks will vary depending on the specific project or campaign. 

Within the scope of work, the communication officer will: 

  • Not share the content or any part thereof with any third party without written permission from GIHD-STMU. All content will be the property of GIHD-STMU. 
  • Be available for revisions and reviews of the written pieces as needed. 
  • Follow the GIHD-STMU writing style guide. 

Requirements

To qualify as communication officer you need: 

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Literature, Marketing, Journalism,     Advertising, Creative/Technical Writing, Social Sciences, or a related field.  
  • A minimum of 1-2 years of experience in Media/Journalism, Public Relations, Communication is mandatory. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Strong understanding of marketing and public relations principles.
  •  Experience with social media management tools and platforms. 
  •  Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse teams.
  •  Proficiency in using communication tools and technologies, including social media platforms, email marketing software, and content management systems.  
  • Experience in developing and implementing communication strategies and campaigns. 
  • Knowledge of media relations, including press release writing, media outreach, and crisis communication. 
  • Familiarity with digital marketing techniques, including SEO, SEM, and analytics. 
  • Creative thinking and the ability to generate innovative ideas for communication initiatives.   
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines effectively. 
  •  Proficiency in graphic design or video editing and experience in copy editing is desirable.
