GIHD

Research-led Teaching: Certificate Courses

GIHD currently offers 6-month professional certificate training programmes in public health and research methods. Drawing upon our latest research, the modules have been developed through an extensive consultative process involving international and national experts and trainers. In each certificate course, blended learning methodology will be applied i.e. participants will be able to learn through a combination of online courses (e- learning) and in-person teaching/training. Participants will be introduced to key concepts and a data set/practice site to be used as a worked example throughout that course.

The applied aspect of the programme or practicum will provide an opportunity for participants to integrate and apply knowledge and skills from coursework to a ’practice site’ where they will translate their learning into practice in accordance with individual programme requirements.

Each course is designed to cater to the diversity in educational and professional backgrounds of our participants. Participants can take the entire course or individual modules of interest.
Credit hours earned through the certificate courses will be transferable to the upcoming Master of Public Health and Research (MPH&R) degree programme at GIHD.

  • This certificate course in quantitative research methods for public health is one of the core building block of our Public Health and Research master’s degree program. The course is based on sound understanding of modern quantitative research methods that are used to estimate population parameters and health effects of interventions in a population. Participants will learn core concepts of designing quantitative research and conducting quantitative data analysis. The certificate course covers the components on critically reviewing existing public health/epidemiological literature; designing and implementing quantitative research; designing quantitative measure and collecting data; and analyzing and interpreting quantitative data. The course participants will have access to data sets to run basic analysis and interpret the findings.

  • Completion certificate will be issued on the basis of completion of course work and submission of research project.

  • The certificate in qualitative research methods for public health is one of the core building block of our Public Health and Research master’s degree programme. The course will provide in-depth understanding of qualitative research methods, from design to implementation to analysis. This course will equip participants with essential knowledge on how to analyze qualitative data in public health research, including qualitative data collection, introduction of interpretative analytical approaches and their usage and use of computer software for coding of qualitative data. Participants will be provided a practice site to gain hands-on experience of conducting qualitative study in public health and to collect, analyze and interpret qualitative data.

  • Completion certificate will be issued on the basis of completing course work and submitting a qualitative research report.

  • This specially designed course aims to build capacity of participants in developing research grant proposals. The course is intended for individuals with little to no grant writing experience. In this course participants will learn how to take a research grant from hope to reality by learning the role of research in seeking out a credible topic and finding potential funding sources. This multi-interactive grant writing course will take the form of a series of grant writing workshops; each workshop is designed to help participants understand grant writing process, and along with tips, tools, and resources to develop strong and competitive grant proposals for health programmes. The course topics include but are not limited to introduction to grant writing; searching for grant funding opportunities and sources; writing a grant proposal following standard elements of grant writing, writing research programme activities and evaluation plan, completing human subjects protection and research ethics requirements and managing budget and financial requirements of grants.

  • Completion certificate will be issued on the basis of completing course work and developing a research grant proposal.

  • The certificate in scientific writing for public health is a unique course that opens up a number of career opportunities in the area of scientific writing and publication. The course is designed to provide understanding of core writing and analytical skills which are needed to articulate complex, scientific material to scientists, clinicians and public oriented communities. This course will enable participants to develop strong grounding in scientific writing skills and prepare them to write scientific research papers describing their original scientific research that can be published. In this course the participants will attend mentorship workshops; to complete a draft of research paper, identify appropriate peer reviewed journals and submitting the manuscript and managing the review process, group discussions and access to online resource material (such as endnote) and high impact journals. The course is focused on the practical aspects of learning and writing which will help participants to emerge from the course multi-skilled.

  • Completion certificate will be issued on the basis of completing a manuscript and its submission in the target journal.

  • Softwares are critical when it comes to public health research and practice. This multidisciplinary certificate course will give public health researchers in-depth understanding of key softwares that are essential for public health research. The participants will have hands-on training and access to; Open Data Kit (ODK), Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS), Analysis of a Moment Structures (AMOS), NViVO (qualitative data analysis tool), Endnote, Rayyan, and Turitin.

  • Completion certificate will be issued on the basis of completion of course work and a project.
